Earlier this month a group of the SolServe crew came together to reflect on this past season of service and giving, and to share our experiences of one evening in particular, when we delivered the donations offered by our Solfire sangha to a group of Sacramentans in need last December.
After months of brainstorming, planning, and spreading the word, we impacted at least 75 individuals with personal, reusable bags filled with a bounty of winter warmth. Folks gathered around and thanked us as we handed them bags thoughtfully filled with warm wear. Women smiled and let us know their preferred colors as we mentioned that we also had a boxful of assorted colors, feminine, and fun beanies and gloves over on the side. Many were grateful to grab two or three bags so that they could also provide for their partners and friends who waited for them elsewhere – down the way at the triage center or perhaps some other location where they had presently laid claim.
Equal, or greater, to the impact we had on the community that night was the impact this experience had on those of us who participated in the hand-off of donations. Gratitude, humility, and humanity were rich in the air from all sides. Thanks to the generosity and loving kindness in our Solfire community, we had more than enough donations to offer to all of the men and women we met that night.
All in all, SolServe has made a successful start and we are optimistic for continued evolution and impact as we continue this journey of service and love.
We are launching into a second wave of donations now. By building on our momentum and adjusting course where lessons have been learned, I am confident that our ability to create love, support, and possibility in our community will only grow.
Join us! We are accepting ongoing donations – hats, gloves, white cotton socks – and will be offering a donation-based Karma Flow with Stephy Birch on Feb. 16. Details can be found online, social media, and at the studio.
