Here at Solfire, we often have various athletes enter our doors, curious about the benefits of yoga—and eager to stretch their muscles in the opposite direction of the weight machine! We’ve hosted a Sacramento Kings basketball player, several local state college baseball players and numerous other high school athletes, and runners from local running clubs—all strong and fit—but craving more flexibility.
Most recently, we’ve been happy to welcome some of Sacramento’s finest and favorite soccer players from FC Republic into our community—our “sangha!” Teammates on the field, and friends off, they have been eager to complement their rigorous training routines with a yoga practice. They have reaped the benefits and unanimously agree that our Sol-powered vinyasa yoga classes have helped to change up their game! Like most athletes we’ve encountered, these FC Republic “yogis” come in for the physical benefits yoga provides: increased flexibility and balance, and total muscle engagement. The mental benefits they have experienced, however, have been a welcome surprise.
“Yoga helps me get my head right—and keep it right on the soccer field and off,” shares defender, Emrah, who has frequented class.
“The constant focus on breathing helps me relieve stress and anger,” cites Jeremy, midfielder on the team.
It’s no secret that playing any sport requires mental fortitude and focus -–especially when the environment is highly charged. Games have been won and lost as a result of split second decisions and actions. For these Sacramento soccer players yoga has become another tool to support the many aspects of their physical game as well as their mental attitude.
So the next time you see one of these Republic players around the studio or in class, give them a high five not only for making it onto their mats and breathing in the benefits of yoga, but also for carrying those benefits onto the soccer field! We’re glad they are part of our community of yogis!
